The past few weeks in the Zebra room have been very busy indeed with children engaging in a number of programs such as Kinder Moves and even a special visit from Kristi from Kelly Sports! These fun filled programs are specifically designed for children to further develop and enhance their physical, emotional and social skills whilst interacting and engaging with others. Kinder Moves has been a huge success for children and staff alike and we thank Tess immensely for her time.
Since our last newsletter the children have shown great interest in Audio books including The Bear went over the Mountain, We’re going on a Croc Hunt, Juicy Juicy Green Grass and If you’re cheeky and you know it. Children have been able to select their books, and with the assistance of educators, place the CD in the CD player and read along to the stories/songs with their peers. It has been fantastic to watch the children’s love of literacy and music develop over the course of the year.
Trucks and Cars have also been huge in the Zebra room at the moment. The large yellow trucks especially have captured the children’s interest and sparked the perfect opportunity to learn more about road safety and road rules. Outside educators have created tracks with masking tape for the children to drive along, introduced free standing traffic lights and stop signs which the children have been using to practice stop, go slow and go. These experiences are helpful for children to broaden their understanding of the world in which they live.
Self help skills have become a focus also with children becoming more interested and showing competence in their personal hygiene, care and safety for themselves and others. Specifically children have been very involved with helping educators apply their own sunscreen whilst discussing the need to be sun smart and protect our skin from the sun. We have also begun to encourage children to bring their own water bottles to drink from throughout the day however we are still providing self help stations including water coolers, cups, tissues and wipes for children to become more self regulatory.
To further encourage the children’s confidence and involve them more in our routines, we have been slowly introducing more and more progressive meal times to better cater to each individual children’s needs and desires. Children are able to come to the table and eat and interact with peers and educators as they are ready without feeling pressured to eat with the group or leave an activity before they are finished. This gives children the opportunity to serve their own meal with assistance from educators. These progressive meal times are helping develop responsive, warm, trusting and respectful relationships with each and every child to promote their well being, self-esteem and sense of security.
As we are fast approaching Summer, we ask that children please wear sun smart clothing such as wide brimmed hats, secure footwear and t-shirts with sleeves as singlets do not provide enough coverage unfortunately. We look forward to plenty of water and outdoor play as the weather is warming up so packing a spare change of clothes may be helpful.
That’s all from the Zebra Room and now we are looking forward to what the rest of the year has to offer! Xxx
